Dominican Republic Traffic Rules

General:
While the Dominican Republic has a well-developed road network, animals on the roadway and deep potholes should still be expected on secondary roads. Night drives over land should be avoided if possible. If they are necessary, it is essential to watch out for unlit vehicles.
Drivers License:
An international driver’s license is absolutely required and should not be older than 90 days.
Promise limit:
There is a 0.25 blood alcohol limit in the Dominican Republic
Fines:
Vary greatly from city to city. However, payments to officers should be made only after noting the badge number; this could cut the fine in half.
Other than that, similar traffic rules apply as in Europe. However, the rules are not always followed on the island’s roads. It is therefore highly recommended to take care to drive defensively and with foresight. It is not uncommon for those involved in an accident to be arrested by the police, however, the police should definitely be called in the event of an accident. As many drivers are often not or insufficiently insured, the risk of a possible hit and run is very high. There is a speed limit of 40 km/h within built-up areas; 60 km/h on rural roads.
