Differences in mentality

Differences in mentality between Slovaks and Germans

Slovakia and Germany do not have a great distance of 800 kilometers and also in terms of mentality there are some similarities. However, there is one or the other way of behaving that can seem strange to a German traveller. Already in the conversation with the service personnel in the hire car centre, these differences can reveal themselves. Those who know what to expect can deal with it better and spend a relaxing stay in Slovakia.

Friendly and somewhat reserved – the quality of service in Slovakia

The service quality in Slovakia is generally good and characterized by a reserved friendliness. After entering the hire car center, the customer is greeted by the staff in a friendly manner. For reasons of politeness, the hand should be shaken, as the Slovaks attach great importance to formality. The handshake is accompanied by a “Good day” or “Dobrý’den”. Afterwards, the customer should give his or her full name. Often the staff speaks German, as about 50% of the students had German as their first or second foreign language at school. Otherwise, English is usually spoken so that communication with guests from abroad is possible. Especially in the hire car centres of the international providers, a solid knowledge of the language is to be expected. In all calmness the customer is served. This process may be a little lengthy for German travellers, but often in Slovakia the service is done with more calmness. At the same time, the clerk is always nice, but seldom shows exuberant friendliness. This restraint is not a sign of arrogance or a disregard of the counterpart, but rather represents a mentality-related restraint. In professional life, a Slovak comes across as very cordial to unfamiliar customers only in exceptional cases, since the two parties do not know each other sufficiently.

Problem solving and punctuality

If problems arise regarding the hire car, the employee will always consult with their supervisor. Slovaks are usually accustomed to an authoritarian style of leadership from their boss, as he or she acts as the sole person giving instructions and making decisions. This can lead to delays in the event of disagreements and extra requests. In terms of punctuality, the customer usually does not have to expect to be faced with closed doors within the official opening hours. Only minimal delays, which can occur especially after important holidays, should be integrated into the personal time planning. The customer is also expected to be on time. To say goodbye, the hand is shaken again and a friendly smile is exchanged. Only in family and friendly circles do Slovaks hug.

The hidden cordiality in consulting services

Whoever converses in more detail with the staff in the course of their hire car will be surprised at the hidden cordiality of the Slovaks. Knowledge of the Slovak language or culture can serve as an ice-breaker for this, as the locals are genuinely happy about an interest in their country. They are very relationship-oriented and show a very warm side when both sides like each other. However, typical topics for small talk such as the weather or how to get there should be avoided. Information from private life such as family, hobbies and holidays are also not appropriate for a first conversation. Of course, irritating topics such as the Hungarian minority, nationalism with Vladimir Meciar and the Roma should also be avoided. On the other hand, those who have informed themselves about local football or local ice hockey teams can score points in the first conversation. Inquiries regarding possible excursion destinations and restaurant tips are also answered with pleasure. If the Slovak feels comfortable in the conversation, he will also ask questions cautiously. Most locals are very interested in other cultures and like to learn more about their foreign visitor, of whom they are proud.
