Road Trip Mahon

Sightseeing in Mahon

Museo de Menorca is a good point to start a city break. Before discovering Mahón Das, you can get comprehensive information about the island’s history here. Afterwards, you can pay a visit to the Esglèsia de Santa Maria. It was built between 1748 and 1788 and the organ, which was installed here in 1809, is particularly impressive. With 3,120 pipes, it is one of the largest organs in Europe.

Continue your stroll to the Claustre del Carme. Here you will not find a monastery at all, because that was already abandoned in 1835. Today the Claustre del Carme houses the market halls of the city. Stroll along the cloister and admire the rich display of the merchants. By now it’s afternoon, all the shops are closing and you can enjoy a siesta in a café by the harbour. Order an espresso and watch the fishermen mending their nets after the catch. When the spirit of enterprise is reawakened, you may feel like visiting the town’s gin factory. Here you’ll learn all about the production of the famous juniper drink on a guided tour, after which you can purchase a few bottles. A glass-bottom boat ride is also an experience to remember. Explore the aquatic world of the Mediterranean without getting wet.

Finding the special bar and the typical restaurant

Now evening has fallen, and it’s time for the aperitif. Head to the terrace of the bar Chritiana i Gradinata. The view of the harbour is magnificent and the selection of drinks leaves nothing to be desired. You can enjoy dinner at the restaurant La Minerva. In former times flour was produced here, today you can enjoy the best fish dishes at affordable prices. The terrace of the restaurant swims directly in the harbour basin.

Find the special hotel

Very British is the name of the game at Hotel Port Mahón, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on Spanish hospitality. The hotel is not cheap, but the magnificent views over the harbour are priceless.

Discover the surroundings

After a restful night’s sleep, you should first steer your hire car to Alaior. The small town with approximately 10,000 inhabitants has a charming old town. Here, especially lovers of shoes and cheese will find what they are looking for, as the town is known for these two products. Stroll through the streets and soak up the atmosphere of a typical Menorcan small town.

Es Mercadal – capital of Menorcan gourmets

We continue our journey to Es Mercadal. This is where gourmets get their money’s worth, as Es Mercadal is said to have the best restaurants in Menorca. Visit the Can Aguedet. Here you can expect Menorcan dishes of the very best quality. You have to bring a little time with you, because everything is freshly prepared. But while you wait for your meal, you can already plan the next excursions on the island.
