El Hierro – natural paradise with many facets

Valverde – capital and village at the same time

Start your tour in Valverde, the capital of the island. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost, because only about 2,000 people live in this town. First visit the Plaza Virrey de Manila, also called Plaza Principal. From here you have a magnificent view of the sea and, in good weather, as far as the neighbouring island of Tenerife. On the square you will also find the magnificent town hall, which was built in the 1930s. The church Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is also worth a visit. It was built at the end of the 18th century and impresses with its richly decorated wooden ceiling in the interior.

Now you can stroll around the streets for a while and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the place. If you get hungry, don’t miss the delicacies at La Taberna de la Villa restaurant. In a beautiful and coherently furnished house, the best Canarian cuisine is served

El Pinar – gem in the mountains

The journey continues to El Pinar. The place has also only about 1,500 inhabitants, nevertheless you are in the third largest place of the island. The village is located in the middle of untouched nature at an altitude of 800 meters. Numerous hiking trails attract adventurous holidaymakers. But there is also a lot to see in the village. Visit the structurally interesting casino, in which, however, is no longer indulged in gambling for a long time.

After that, you can take a look at the church built in 1719. Its bell tower was once used to keep an eye out for pirates. You can get an even better view from Montaña de Tanajara. The summit is at an altitude of 911 metres. It’s worth the climb.

La Restinga – Fishing village with charm

Your next destination is La Restinga. Here you will reach the coast. Although the small fishing village with its 500 inhabitants is considered the most popular resort on the island, it has retained its original character. From 15:00 you can buy the catch of the day in the fish hall. If you prefer to admire the fish in the wild, you can also book a diving course in La Restinga. Several diving schools offer their services here.

After an eventful day, you can then enjoy excellent fish specialities in the El Refugio restaurant. The goods are guaranteed fresh, because the host is a fisherman himself. Now it is time to look for a cosy place to spend the night. You won’t find luxurious houses in La Restinga, but there are a few cosy guesthouses. We recommend the Pensión Kai Marino. The rooms are comfortably furnished and offer a wide view over the harbour. The owner personally takes care of the guests. Maybe you still sit down on one of the terraces of the pension, enjoy a glass of wine and plan the next stops of your road trip on El Hierro.
