Differences in mentality between Spaniards and Germans

What are the most common differences in mentality between Spaniards and Germans? In particular, in terms of punctuality, the idea of service, as well as in terms of performance and quality, there are undoubtedly differences between the two nationalities. This is also the case in the hire car sector, as reports of Germans who were customers of hire car companies in Spain, which can be read in the internet, show. Whereby it is to be assumed that rarely problems arise, if it concerns large, internationally operating companies. But even here, of course, there may be individual employees who fulfill the clichés of their country.

The most important characteristic of the Spanish people in terms of mentality is a certain vitalism, that is, the love of life in general and in all its forms. Joie de vivre is the common term. But also individualism, humanism and a great pride characterize the average Spaniard. The relationship of the Spanish reality is seen from the basic position of “I and the world”. The focus of a Spaniard is therefore on his own little world. However, this includes not only one’s own ego, but also one’s family and friends, and certainly one’s ethnic group. Thus, the Catalans are just as much a proud people as the Basques. The character of the Spaniards can be described on the one hand with seriousness, on the other hand with terms like open and chivalrous, human and humorous. It is also said that Spaniards work well in teams. They are very sociable and spend a lot of time in public, i.e. in bars, restaurants or cafés, and this with pleasure also late in the evening. This is where they meet up with friends, relatives or colleagues. Punctuality is not a characteristic of most Spaniards. They are southerners, they want to enjoy their lives and not constantly look at the clock. Spaniards cannot stand it when their personal freedom is restricted. For example, if you have a problem with your hire car, you may well hear the dreaded word manana, meaning tomorrow, in a garage. The Spaniards do not like to be rushed. However, they are very spirited, openly showing their feelings and emotions, especially through expressive gestures, loud voices and lively facial expressions.

Germans are generally considered more reserved. They are northerners and thus introverted, which of course does not apply to everyone on average. Especially regionally there are big differences. The Swabians, for example, are considered stingy and the Berliners as bon vivants with a “Kodderschnauze”. In the Ruhr area live the Malocher and in the north the Schweiger. There are these types, but there are also exceptions. In general, it is certainly not completely wrong that Germans are punctual, reliable and hard-working. German cars are popular all over the world because similar attributes apply to them. They are reliable and technically flawless. Foreign companies like German customers because they know they will show up on time, for example, deliver and pay for their rental vehicle on time. They don’t negotiate, they don’t put things off until tomorrow, they have plans and they want to keep them. It can be assumed that Spaniards but also other foreigners say that Germans are not easy-going and very meticulous. Other prejudices are that Germans are prone to discontent and like to show who they are and what they have, especially abroad. Pride is not the Germans’ thing. Whoever is on the throne and whoever is cheered on will eventually be dropped. Examples confirming this behavior abound, especially in the realm of so-called celebrities. Of course, they may well be clichés. Not all Spaniards are as described. Just as not all Germans are not stereotypically punctual and hard-working. There is absolutely nothing to be said against renting a car while on holiday in Spain. Especially with the worldwide operating companies, customers can expect international standards. However, it is possible that patience may be required. And in terms of service, certainly different standards apply than in Germany. But with a certain composure, which a holiday maker should have during the holiday season, this is bearable. Performance and quality when booking a hire car should be on an international standard.
