General:

South Africa has a well-developed road network with a total of 358,596 route kilometres, although only just under 60,000 of these are tarred. Motorways are mainly between the major cities, most of which are toll roads and the charge is based on the size of the vehicle. Credit cards are not accepted for refuelling. Parking is only allowed in the direction of travel.

All over the country, traffic drives on the left and a safe distance of four vehicle lengths must be maintained

Driving license:

An international driving licence is required in South Africa.

Promise limit:

The 0.5 per mille limit applies.

Fine:

Traffic fines are at the discretion of the police and vary widely, but do not have to be paid in cash. Talking on the phone in a car is only allowed with a hands-free device. Breaking this rule can be very expensive.

Other:

Similar traffic rules apply as in Europe. Speed limits are 60 km/h in cities. Outside built-up areas and on expressways, the speed limit is 100 km/h and on motorways 120 km/h. Children under the age of 14 may only ride in the back seat of the vehicle and lights must be switched on in foggy and/or dusty conditions. In South Africa, it is always right-before-left on roundabouts.
