Traffic rules Ukraine

General:

In Ukraine there is currently no coherent motorway network, but it has a well-developed system of trunk roads and expressways which is in excellent condition. Gas stations are not as frequent as in Western Europe. So you should always fill up in time. You can only pay in local currency here, credit cards are not accepted.

Driving licence:

An international driver’s license is absolutely required in Ukraine.

Promise limit:

The 0.0 blood alcohol limit applies everywhere in Ukraine.

Fines:

Traffic fines are solely at the discretion of the police and vary widely. What is certain, however, is that foreigners will always face a surcharge. Misdemeanors under the influence of alcohol can expect 218 – 291 euros and a possible driving ban.

Talking on the phone in the car is only allowed with a suitable hands-free device. Breaking this rule can be very expensive.

Other:

Similar traffic rules apply as in Europe. Speed limits are 60 km/h in cities and 20 km/h in residential areas. Outside built-up areas and on expressways, the speed limit is 90 km/h, and 130 km/h on motorways. Children under 12 years of age and children shorter than 1.45 m are only allowed in the back seat of the vehicle.
