Discover Hartford by Hire Car

Hartford is the capital of the state of Connecticut on the east coast of the United States.
Located in the heart of the state, the city takes its name from the town of the same name in England, which was home to Hartford’s founder, Samuel Stones.
First Hartford was settled from the Netherlands in 1623. The first English arrived in 1636, though the city in its current form was not formed until the two settlements were combined in the 19th century.
Hartford is a successful mix of historic buildings and ultra-modern skyscrapers. In historical terms, Hartford is almost unique by American standards. Several structures and facilities are the oldest of their kind in the entire United States. These include the Old State House, which was designed in the Federation style and was the first legislative building in the United States. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the history of Connecticut. Also absolutely picturesque is the State Capitol, a gold-domed neoclassical splendor built in 1878 near Bushnell Park. The latter has a romantic early 20th-century carousel in the center and is the first public park in America.
A Hartford highlight is the Wadsworth Atheneum, which was the first museum in the country to open in 1841. Today, it houses more than 45,000 works of art including works by Matisse, Dali, Monet, Hunt and Picasso. Also not to be missed is a visit to Mark Twain’s birthplace. The playful 1874 building still features the original furnishings.
From Hartford, it’s also a good idea to take a trip by hire car to the nearby Lake Compounce, America’s oldest amusement park.
