The city of Podgorica can look back on quite an eventful past.

Originally founded in 1326 as part of the Kingdom of Serbia, it has had several rulers and occupiers over the centuries until it finally became the capital of Montenegro in 2006.

For most of its turbulent history, more than 400 years from 1466 until the Congress of Vienna in 1878, it was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.

Sights in Podgorica

The long period of Ottoman Empire rule is still reflected in Podgorica’s eclectic architecture.

Numerous minarets and mosques dominate the cityscape, although many modernist buildings of glass, steel and concrete have nonetheless been added since the building boom began in the 1990s.

An extremely striking and impressive example of this is above all the Millennium Bridge, which opened in 2005 and is now also considered a landmark of Podgorica. It stretches imposingly over the Moraca River, into which the Zeta flows here.

Development and presence of Podgorica

In 1878 Podgorica was assigned to Montenegro and became the country’s central trading hub. Unlike the rest of the state, many Slavs and Albanders settled here.

During the World Wars, the city was occupied by Austria, Italy and Germany.

This period put a European stamp on the town, which was also called Titograd while it was part of Yugoslavia from 1946 to 1992.

Since Podgorica, which by the way means “below the mountain”, is spread out with its 56 municipalities, it is advisable to explore it by hire car.
