Traffic rules Hungary

General:
Hungary has a relatively well-developed road network, which is in decent condition on the main routes. However, many rural roads are sparsely lit and unrestricted level crossings are the norm. Most motorways are toll roads. Outside of built-up areas, you must drive with your lights on, even during the day. Cycle lanes, are recognisable by a solid line at the side of the road and trams and buses always have right of way.
Driving licence:
An international driving licence is not essential in Hungary.
Promise limit:
It is strictly forbidden to drink and drive in Hungary, so 0.0 per mille limit.
Fine:
Alcohol at the wheel: up to max. 373 euros and driving ban;
Speeding: up to 240 euros
Telephoning without hands-free device: up to 100 euros
Red light: from 80 euros
Overtaking ban disregarded: from 80 euros
Parking ban: from 10 euros
Similar traffic rules apply as everywhere in Europe. Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities. Outside built-up areas, the speed limit is 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Since 1 January 2008, high-visibility vests have also been compulsory in Hungary. Children under 12 years of age may only be carried in the back seat of the vehicle. Stopping is prohibited at yellow markings on the roadside and it is recommended to carry snow chains in the vehicle in winter.
