The country at the southernmost tip of Africa is therefore a magnet for tourists from all over the world. The national parks are easily accessible to visitors. The most famous of them is certainly the Kruger National Park.

Breathtaking view from Table Mountain

Table Mountain towers over the metropolis of Cape Town and is also its landmark. From the mountain plateau you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the city to the sea. By cable car you can easily get to the approximately 1000 meter high mountain.

Especially in spring, a veritable sea of flowers grows on Table Mountain. The nature reserve of Table Mountain includes a rich diversity of species. For Cape Town residents and tourists, Table Mountain is a popular destination to hike or picnic.

Wildlife Sanctuary Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve and the most famous national park in South Africa. The south in particular is ideally developed for tourists. There are excellent roads and numerous camps where you can also stay overnight. The safety precautions of the park should be strictly observed in order not to disturb the animals and not to put oneself in danger. The flora and fauna of the Kruger National Park is extremely varied. Thus, it is possible to see rhinos, lions and elephants at close range.

Phinda Nature Reserve

The Phinda Nature Reserve is one of South Africa’s most charming and popular protected areas. A variety of safaris are available.

So you can explore the region by boat or canoe and observe the animals and plants from a different perspective. Tours on foot and diving courses at the southernmost reefs in the world are also offered.

Hiking in the Drakensberg

Clear mountain air, waterfalls, multi-faceted mountains and magnificent floral and bird life make the Drakensberg a popular destination. The highest mountains in South Africa are located here. Especially hikers and cyclists get their money’s worth.

A particular highlight is the dramatic Blyde River Canyon, which is up to 800 metres deep.

Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town

The richness and diversity of the underwater world of the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans can be admired at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.

In over 30 tanks, countless species of fish, shells, jellyfish and anemones cavort. Sharks and rays swim in a 2 million litre tank and the kelp forest replicates coastal wildlife. There’s even a sandy beach with seals and penguins.

The special tip:

Sterkfontein Caves – Cradle of Humankind

About 50 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, the “Cradle of Humankind” awaits. In the karst caves of the “Sterkfontein Caves” 2.6 to 3 million years old bones of early hominids were found. Excavations continue to this day.

The cave is also known for the approximately 2.5 million-year-old skeleton of a hominid, affectionately known as “Little Foot”. The excavation site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. In a visitor centre, an exhibition provides information on the history of human development.
