Differences in mentality between Swiss and Germans

Although Switzerland is a direct neighbour of Germany, there are still some differences in terms of mentality. The small state is world famous for its steady neutrality and its special status within Europe. Furthermore, the pronounced sense of cleanliness and order is not a prejudice, which is why many Germans are enthusiastic about Switzerland. Already when renting a hire car, the traveler gets a small taste of the fact that some things are different in the neighboring country.
Distant, correct and very polite – the service quality in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the traveler can usually expect a very good service, which is characterized by a great competence. The hire cars are usually in excellent condition and extremely clean. The customer is served with the greatest care. Agreements are always kept and unpleasant surprises are not to be expected. Similar to Germany, the Swiss are characterized by a great punctuality and commitment. The customer should not only expect this from the hire car agency, but should also show this characteristic himself. A return of the rental vehicle at the agreed date is recommendable, because the goodwill times are often shorter in contrast to southern countries. Problems are solved by the staff in a professional way and as fast as possible, so that inconveniences for the customer are avoided. For some Germans, the service may occasionally seem too perfected. A friendly word on the side or a noncommittal small talk are usually omitted, which can make the advice seem somewhat distant. This distance is due to the slightly closed mentality of the Swiss, which should not be confused with an arrogant appearance. Should it still come to a small talk, topics such as the relationship of Switzerland to the EU should be avoided at all costs.
The conversation with the service staff
Depending on where in Switzerland the hire car is rented, the customer will encounter a German-speaking staff. In the Italian and French speaking areas of Switzerland, it is occasionally necessary to switch to English, the world language, for mutual communication. However, the documents for renting the vehicle are usually available in all three languages. If you speak in German with the service personnel, you should refrain from imitating the Swiss German dialects. Mostly, the result is not crowned with success, which is why it seems insulting to many Swiss or leaves the impression of ingratiation. Anyone wishing to voice criticism should not do so too directly. The Swiss are very sensitive to choice of words, phrasing and style, which is why negative remarks should be made with the utmost care. It is advisable to paraphrase criticism carefully. Furthermore, the word “must” should be avoided. Wishes and requests to the service team are better given the necessary emphasis with the word “please”, which is usually clearly understood. Furthermore, the use of the subjunctive suggests itself, so that formulations such as “Would you?” or “May I ask you?” should be used. These examples also show that it is inappropriate to address staff as “du” without being asked. Likewise, it is part of good style to let the other person finish, which should be taken to heart even if you are extremely impatient and hectic.
